Stylish Ways To Decorate With Plants

Stylish Ways To Decorate
With Plants

“A beautiful plant is like having a friend around the house.” ~ Beth Ditto

If you’re fortunate enough to have a garden you will understand the thrill of cutting your own flowers and plants to use in your home decor. Plants are a great way to bring a natural element to an interior space. Create unexpected drama and visual interest by incorporating them in ways that soften aesthetics and feel welcoming. Less is really more when styling to get a curated look that doesn’t take away from the overall design of a room.

FOYER & ENTRYWAY

Throughout the home plants can be strategically placed in differing levels depending on the height of the plant. You can see in these foyer and entryway examples that a table or chest are perfect to place them on top of at the eye level.

LIVING ROOM

Our friend the fiddle leaf fig tree is a popular taller potted plant adding an updated tropical feel to any corner. These plants need special attention with proper drainage and higher humidity levels, so misting your plant regularly is suggested. If being a “green thumb” isn’t your thing there are now several sources to find faux fiddle leaf fig trees that look very real. These plants come in a lot of different sizes to accommodate filling in spaces. The tree version can grow over six feet for those extra tall ceiling heights.

A few plant leaf cuttings can be just what a corner needs to brighten a monochromatic color scheme.

Styling with plants on a coffee table or in subtle ways on bookshelves can fill in a vignette for a polished look to balance out angles and architecture.

Unique plants are great for striking up conversation like the hardy and lush chinese fan palm. Potted plants on floor levels can ground a space… this green pot is a lovely example of how the continuation of the vibrant green all the way to the floor makes it a visual stand out.

AIR FILTERING PLANTS

Plants can improve air quality by filtering the air around us. In the 1980’s the NASA Clean Air Test showed that certain plants help filter harmful toxins and pollutants in space stations. Adding these plants for cleaner air quality is a great step to your families wellness.

Liven up your interiors and style your space with plants! With all of the technology in our lives today studies have shown that these natural elements help to reduce stress. The perfect reason to make plants a focal point in your home decor.

Master Bathroom Remodel: Dover Road Project

Master Bathroom Remodel:
Dover Road Project

“Happiness is taking a long, hot bubble bath.”

Our dear clients at the Dover Road Project purchased this beautiful home and wanted to make updates to turn their new house into a home for themselves. You may have seen this colorful entryway in our social media posts. However while this vibrant front door is the perfect shade of lively green let us warn you that the green in the before pictures of our clients previous Master Bathroom is well… not (be warned!). One of the major areas that needed attention in this newly purchased home was the Master Bathroom, what once was a very interesting 1950’s tiled bathroom (wink) is now a modern contemporary sanctuary.

Ansel Olson Photography

BEFORE: DOVER ROAD REMODEL

What did we tell you… everything from the pink porcelain and mosaic retro tile including toothbrush and soap holders to the retro sink and plastic wavy shower wall had to go. The layout of the bathroom needed to be completely rearranged to add double sinks and privacy for the toilet area. So we decided to take room from the hallway closet area making the new layout workable to include room for a freestanding soaking tub.

This “Before” of the master bathroom proves that it even had a pink toilet… it’s now 2019 and this bathroom deserved to be loved again in a new — clean and contemporary way.

Demo was underway and bit by bit every retro layer was removed…

Screen Shot 2018-12-29 at 1.09.29 PM.png

Even the subfloor was removed to secure the base floor structures, and for quite a while this tape was in place.

After the demo was complete and the plumbing moved the framing could begin, which is always a great point of progress to start for clients. In the meantime finishes needed to be selected… the funny thing about this master bathroom remodel was an interesting compromise between the owners. A humorous understanding was made that since the Misses was able to get a new closet area with added organization she so graciously agreed that the Mister would have way-in to the bathroom design style and choice of finishes. He does like his vanity lighting to be a certain way to start his daily routine… and of course theirs the hair styling which needs to be just right.

NEW FLOOR PLAN

FINISHES

We selected porcelain tile in three versions of the Classic Stone Calacatta Oro — 12 x 24 tile for the shower walls and bathroom floor, basket weave mosaic for the shower floor and hexagon mosaic was installed in two vertical bands creating eye catching visual interest in the space. The wall sconces feature a rich old bronze finish complemented by a hexagon-shaped white glass shade to enhance the decor tying the finishes together.

AFTER: MASTER BATHROOM REMODEL

Ahhhh the “After”…. while projects of this scope can take several months to demo, plan, get approval and execute. This means that clients have to be extremely patient during the process, as these clients are… and the final reveal you can see is entirely worth the wait.

Ansel Olson Photography

This master bathroom is now a dream space that is bright, soak ready and smells a world fresher! Undeniably a current bathroom design that will last for many years to come.

Another happy client has been serviced and a successful project design completed by Mathe Design and our supportive team. We hope you have enjoyed seeing more of the before and after behind the scenes of this remodel. We’re excited to share more projects like this for you in the future. Now… where are those lavander bath salts!

Artist Spotlight: Liza Pruitt, Art Dealer

Artist Spotlight: Liza Pruitt
– Art Dealer –

“Art is something that makes you breathe with a different kind of happiness.” ~ Anni Albers"

Melissa Mathe Interior Design works with multiple artists to find the right piece of art for a space. Whether it be a piece from an artists collection or a commissioned piece, there are lots of options for finding the right piece of art which can feel overwhelming. Not only do we have relationships with artists, but also we work with art dealers to procure these pieces. One of our local art dealers is Liza Pruitt. This week we have spoken with Liza to bring you a little more insight to what an art dealer is and how are they helpful in finding the right piece of art for your space.

Liza is a Savannah-born, Richmonder who works with artists to ensure designers and clients find the perfect piece for their space. She represents an ever-growing artist collective full of talent. It’s easy to see why the LP collection is taking off, Liza has a passion for collecting art as well as a passion for “connecting people with the art that speaks their language”.

TELL US MORE! We’ve interviewed Liza and have a lot of fun things to share…

1- When did you first know you had a love and passion for Art Work?
I grew up among authentic, original artwork my whole life. My mother and my grandmother both had an eye for beautiful artwork. Therefore, my appreciation started at a young age, but it wasn’t until my husband and I bought our first house 7 years ago that I started to collect artwork. I knew then that surrounding our walls with art made me feel right at home.

2- What do you look for in Artists you represent and how do you find their artwork?
I primarily work with emerging artists whose artwork speaks to me. The artists I work with I am passionate about and proud to call friends. The collective has become a community of strong women + men. An artist’s story just as an important to me. I discover artists from my travels, word of mouth, and of course social media!

3- Tell us more about your framing options…are their any framing trends you’ve seen for 2019?
Frame of Mind – in Richmond, Va is my go to framing guru. Inge and Miranda always have the best frames and suggestions. Right now I love floating paper pieces on linen with a classic gold or silver frame depending on the artwork colors. With canvas - I love a simple floating frame.

4- Do you have a personal collection of artwork you could share more about with us… what is your style influenced by.
Yes! I have filled my walls with artists I work with but also artists I have met throughout the years. To name a few: Renee Bouchon, Elaine Burge, Raven Roxanne, Blakely Little, Anna Vaughn Kincheloe (yes I own 8 of her pieces :)), Claiborne Riley, Theodora Miller, Caroline Pinney plus more. I believe art gives a voice to the walls we surround ourselves with. Each and every piece I have collected has a story and meaning to me.

Huntley.png

Elaine Burge Art: commissioned painting of Liza’s sweet dog Huntley

5- Are there any upcoming events on the calendar this Spring/Summer to showcase artists you represent and their work?
I am heading to High Point Market this weekend. In celebration of the gallery’s debut, I have collaborated with Pearson Furniture Company, Kim Scodro Interiors, and Kerry Hays Art to curate 16 pieces that will fill the walls of a beautiful showroom at this Spring’s High Point Market (April 6- 10). As one of Liza Pruitt Collective’s represented artists, Kerry Hays worked with me to create custom artwork that coordinates with Kim Scodro’s exclusive collection with Pearson Furniture Company.
I will also be showcasing 6 of my artists in Norfolk Academy’s Annual Art Show later this month/May.

https://www.norfolkacademy.org/support/field-day/art-gallery

6- Who would be a dream client of yours?
I love working and meeting all different kinds of people/styles. My job is to source a piece that meets my client’s needs. Therefore, every client I have worked with has given me a challenge to find the perfect piece and I love the feeling of presenting a piece that truly speaks to them!

7- What is your favorite travel destination?

Hope Town, Elbow Cays, Bahamas or Jackson Hole, WY. Both hold dear memories close to my heart.

8- Are there any particular art museums around the world you’ve been to that are a favorite to revisit?
I love more connecting with the artists and visiting their studios. Learning about the process and their story. This has created more of a connection for me. But other galleries that I truly admire and love is Anne Irwin Gallery and Greg Irby Gallery both located in Atlanta, Ga. They represent some amazing artists.

Artist Spotlight: Jill Seale

Artist Spotlight: Jill Seale

The creative process is captivating! One must leap off the cliff of “what is”, into a flight of fancy of “what could be.” ~ Jill Seale

JillSealeWallpapers.jpg

We are excited to share an Artist Spotlight on the blog featuring the talented product and textile designer Jill Seale. Bringing her love for design and creativity to the world from her studio in Charlotte, North Carolina. Launching her product offerings at the Hight Point Market in 2017. Since then the Jill Seale Design Studio has won numerous awards and praise in the gifting and home decor industry. Her goal in sharing her designs is to uplift others and inspire with lively patterns and colors expressed through a journey in learning the historic art form of marbling.

Jill Seale products are sold world-wide through manufacturers, fine boutiques and leading retailers. You can see Jill at work and more about her behind the scenes marbling technique here. Melissa Mathe Interior Design has had the pleasure of collaborating with Jill Seale in our room design at the Richmond RSOL Designer House of 2018 and in our client projects.

Here are some of the product offerings in the Jill Seale Design Studio.

We’ve had the pleasure of interviewing Jill Seale and asking her some questions to share with you.

1) How did you get your start in textile design?
Seale: My background is in product design where textiles was a minor part and I've always wanted to design textiles for home. It may be genetic...my mom studied textile design at the Cleveland Institute of Art but got married and that was the end of that! We joke she outsourced it to me. When I studied my passion of paper marbling in Florence I felt I found my unique voice in textiles.

2) We know you traveled to Italy and were inspired to create marbling which led to many of your designs.
What is your favorite part of Italy and why? How often do you get to travel back to Italy?

Seale: While I love all of Italy, Florence owns me. I can't say why exactly but I feel a deep resonance with SOUL. That's the only word I can come up with to describe the feeling. It's the birthplace of the Renaissance and every inch of the city and buildings and art carry an imprint of someone who created, carved, painted, architecturally designed, and built it.  I am especially enamored with the tiny ateliers where artisans create and sell their work. In Italy art is given the proper time it takes to be created with care and craftsmanship. There truly is something about Italian-made quality and it reinforces my belief to honor the care and time good design deserves.  I do an annual pilgrimage to immerse in that way of life and refresh my artist soul.

3) What do you love most about creating textiles?
Seale: I love: the process of exploration in creating art,  the chance that is involved with that and being present to identify what would make a good design. I love hand-creating a repeat pattern, seeing a pattern come to life in other products such as wallcovering, trays, lampshades, tabletop. I love seeing how designers, furniture, rug, apparel and gift manufacturers envision uses for my designs, and I love bringing the ancient art of marbling and the human element of hand illustration and painting into the home in a prominent way. In other "word", EVERYTHING.

 4) What do you find to be challenging and also rewarding about textile design?
Seale: I don't even recognize 'challenging' because everything is just part of the process and I roll. If I HAD to say, it's paring down the final selections for each release. Rewarding? By far the relationships with the wonderful people I've met in this industry. It's also rewarding to witness the delight in those who embrace my work and being able to work directly with designers and manufacturers to provide (sometimes custom) uplifting designs and solutions that people live with.  It's extremely rewarding to be able to share this journey with my Mom, as her textile design ambassador!

5) Do you have a favorite pattern that you have created in your designs?
Seale: Each design was selected because I love something special about it, but a design that is extra special to me is Tuscan Sunset which was created in Florence and was my first design selected for my foray into furniture with Wesley Hall Furniture.

6) What major events do you love to attend to share your products?
Seale: High Point Market has been my launch pad and with two shows a year, it keeps me busy. It is the only show I currently do other than the occasional small gift show.

 7) Do you have any new products on the horizon that you can share? (Melissa loves her pair of Banksy patterned pants)  Seale: Go Banksy! With my product design background I can't help but always be thinking of new applications (spots on this leopard!) I'm deepening my home decor offerings and have some things in the works for outside of home! Stay tuned!

 8) Any words of advice for designers who are just starting out in textiles?
Seale: Find your own voice. Tell your own story. Don't pay attention to trends - they come, they go.  Everyone appreciates an original vision. Listen to what designers are asking for, but give the unexpected right along with it.

High Point Market 2018

In developing the room design at the RSOL Designer House 2018 Melissa Mathe wanted to incorporate designs from local and east coast artists and designers. Having been introduced to Jill Seale at High Point Market she was over the moon excited about using the “Banksy” design to help complete her black and white classic contemporary room design. Having custom made roman shades and duvets to outfit the windows and beds. A high topic of conversation during the event room tours.

Using a belgium cotton fabric for the window draperies in the “Mixed Metals” design was the perfect pairing to create interest in our clients office space in their newly constructed custom built home. A lovely balance in the combination of neutral decor and contemporary design.

At the 2019 Las Vegas Market, Jill Seale and Company C launched the preview of the new Jill Seale rug designs introduced in their line. Along with a demo of her technique to show market attendees. An exciting addition to Jill’s home decor product designs.

The Marie Kondo Effect: Tips On A Well Organized Home

The Marie Kondo Effect: Tips On A Well Organized Home

“Being organized isn’t about getting rid of everything you own or trying to become a different person; it’s about living the way you want to live, but better.” ~ Andrew Mellen

House Beautiful

House Beautiful

Since the series “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo” has been recently released on Netflix it has quickly become a growing phenomenon. You can certainly find several articles on ways to organize in the month of January, as the new year brings with it new things. The Marie Kondo Effect - takes things to a higher level of mindfulness in a well organized home. As a youngster Marie was enchanted with organization and started her own business while attending University in Tokyo. Having created the KonMari Method which is a state of mind - to cherish things that spark joy in one’s life. She now has consultants around the world that help people to learn the art of tidying up as a way of life. Her book serves as a quide to help people move forward through major life changes beyond the home as well as creating the habit of keeping organized as a lifestyle.

The KonMarie Method is a five category way of tidying which includes:
1) Clothing
2) Books
3) Paper Documents
4) Komono (Miscellaneous in Japanese)
5) Sentimental Items

West Wing Magazine

West Wing Magazine

It is easy to get lost in the quiet calm of Maries voice and feel swept away in learning how she keeps a home together. In her method she starts with thanking the house for being a protecting shelter and being there daily for its owner. As she begins with category one Marie encourages people to collect all of their clothes and determine, by feeling them, whether they spark joy and if not… letting go of them by thanking them and putting them in a pile to donate or discard. Her folding method of creating a half inch rectangle and stacking items upright is so that things are easily viewable. Which helps to keep ones mind clear to make quick decisions and go about their day. She then moves through the categories helping to group like things, organized into boxes and trays.

Marie explains that clutter effects relationships within the atmosphere of a space. By choosing joy and learning to tidy up together it can strengthen bonds in each others relationships. Teaching children the art of tidying while they are young will give them the skills to create the habit before they grow older. They will learn this from watching how you tidy up. She also recommends bringing sentimental items into the home as a reminder of the joy that has brought a couple and family together.

Kitchn Video

Kitchn Video

A few tips she shares regarding the kitchen and pantry are to check expiration dates of food and organize by food type. With purchased clothes and boxes from incoming mail she recommends to remove tags immediately and place items where they will be stored in the home so they become your belongings. Paper documents get put in two piles, one “to be saved” and the other “to be dealt with” setting a calendar reminder to handle them. In catch-all areas gather similar items and separate into subcategories to easily view so as to not let them continue to pile up. As you may see in her series clearing the clutter does bring magic into a home… it is seen within the process of learning to live with less non-joyful material things, letting them go and sharing with others in the responsibilities of a home together.

Charles J. Williams

We interviewed a professional organizer and asked him a few questions on his perspective in making organizing a lifestyle.

You can find Charles J. Williams company and services at www.compassrva.com

1) When is it a good time to hire a professional for organizing?
Charles: It’s always a good time to reach out for help on basic organizing. We’re here to help guide folks towards living a more simple and efficient daily life through organizations. We help in clearing clutter and creating customized systems of maintenance…and this is something a majority of our customers need. Whether on a minor scale or within an entire household. This can ultimately change the way you live and eliminate the overwhelm and stress caused by surroundings and potential bad habits.

2) Is there a project to small or too large you would tackle?
Charles: Nothing is ever too “small” a project for me. Even if you think it’s something really minor, chances are it’s going to make a huge impact on your life. On the flip side, I refer larger more extreme cases to a professional team in what’s considered, “Level 5” Hoarders…like what you see on television. I am a team of one and those scenarios often take additional help in the field of psychology and extra hands for removal to tackle.

3) What is the number on mistake you see with clients?
Charles: There are two mistakes I see new clients make on a fairly frequent basis. The first is purchasing containers as a “tool” before knowing what and how much of your belongings need to be contained, is simply a waste of money and time. People have come to believe containers to be the ultimate savior when it comes to getting organized, when the systems are what really make the difference. The second mistake being that clients will “clean up” before I get there. I can’t truly see what their daily habits look like and customize new routines if they hide how their space usually looks. There is no judgement on our end…we would rather see the true clutter.

Matt Paxton

We also interviewed a good friend and national renown extreme cleaning expert featured on the hit television show Hoarders. To get some insight on his thoughts on the topic.

While his experience is in a world beyond just letting things go, he deals with massive clean outs caused from more traumatic life events. Matt shares the importance of routine clean up to keep things under wraps. You can find Matts company and services at www.wayforth.com

Here are some questions that Matt answered to expand on extreme clutter cases and his views on the Marie Kondo method.

1) When is a good time to call an extreme clutter expert?
Matt: Reach out to a therapist before you reach out to a cleaning expert for extreme cases. If you are a family member that wants to help, let the hoarder know you care about them, you know they are struggling and you are ready to talk about it with them when THEY are ready.

2) What would be a good average percentage of homes you experience a year that are to the extreme?
Matt: National statistic is 5% of America struggles with hoarding, which is just under 15,000,000. That’s a big number… it’s a real thing and people shouldn’t be embarrassed.  Everyone in America knows someone who struggles with hoarding.

3) How often would you recommend people keep up with clearing the clutter?
Matt: Technically, I think people should clean up DAILY.  Its like physical fitness or diet.  It’s something you work on and dedicate time in your life to.  I clean every night before I go to bed, so when I wake up, the home is fresh and ready to go.  Also, if you clean 10 minutes a night, the house never gets too far away from you.

4) Do you have any resources of companies that aren’t widely known for donating or who pick up discarded items?
Matt: I focus on LOCAL, not national donation centers.  Give to places that GIVE the products to people in need or give legit well paying jobs to people that need work.  Personally I support “Dress for success, Amvets, Tech for Troops, Catholic Charities, Soles for Souls and St Joseph’s Villas. My hoarders and myself tend to stay away from retail focused donation companies.

5) Any words of encouragement to share with others to keep tidy?
Matt: Yeah, just tell people that’s it’s just stuff.  It’s not the most important thing in the world.  We keep stuff because of the memories and people attached to those items or what we hope people will think about us for the items.  Focus on your real life, your actions, your experiences and the stories, the memories, NOT the stuff.

Botton line, is Marie Kondo right?  Not sure that her method works for everyone, I know it doesn’t work for my hoarders but she definitely isn’t WRONG.  At the end of day, we are looking for joy, for happiness and unfortunately, we attach a lot of our self-worth and happiness to stuff….that’s the problem.  It’s not the simple, but her method is rooted in positivity, which brings me joy.
